If you follow my blog, you know that Kendyl fell off her bike and broke her leg on April 3rd!! Yes, that's 5 months ago!! She was in a wheelchair with a cast up to her thigh for 9 weeks and then had a half cast for another 5 weeks. As a result of her being immobilized for so long, once she got out of the cast, she could not walk. Literally, she forgot how to walk. We've been going to physical therapy for the last 4 weeks and she is doing great!!
She started walking a few weeks ago -- it wasn't a pretty walk, but it was a walk. It was the highlight of our summer!! The doctor calls it The Frankenstein Lurch, so that gives you a little bit of a visual of how she is walking. The physical therapist calls her "The Queen of Compensation", meaning she is doing everything possible with her hips to not have to put pressure on her weak leg. A bad habit she has developed that we are currently working on in physical therapy.
This week she got on the treadmill for the first time and it was AWESOME!!! She was walking!! Of course, she was holding onto the sides for assistance, but she did great! I had to hold back the happy tears!
Take a look...
Pretty great, huh!!!
With a few more days of summer left, it looks like she will be starting school with crutches. Our goal was to be walking before school started, but it's a process -- a slow one, building blocks, if you will. But that's ok, at least she is doing much better and we are so thankful for that. I just have to keep reminding myself that it is a process -- very hard for a mother watching her daughter going through this.
Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes and prayers and blessings for the last 5 months. Just wanted to share this uplifting video to show her progress.
I have a few more videos I'll be sharing throughout the next few weeks of her progress and hard work.
Thanks for watching!!
Have a great day!!
